VIN Decoding Explained: Understanding Your Car's DNA
Learn how to read the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stamped on your car, decode its manufacturing month & year, and see how CARROBAAR Drive uses VIN verification to protect car buyers.
What is a VIN and Where is it Located?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric string assigned to every motor vehicle when manufactured. It serves as your car's finger-print, containing coded factory information about the manufacturer, model line, engine code, assembly plant, and exact production month and year.
- Stamped on the engine bay firewall (bulkhead).
- On a metal plaque at the bottom corner of the front windshield.
- On the driver or passenger side B-pillar door frame.
- Under the driver seat frame beneath a flap.
- Printed on your RTO Registration Certificate (RC) & Tax Invoice.
How CARROBAAR Drive Verifies Your VIN During PDI
At CARROBAAR Drive, during our comprehensive 300+ point Pre-Delivery Inspection across Gujarat, our certified inspectors physically cross-check the VIN stamped on the engine bulkhead against the glass etching, B-pillar badge, and invoice papers. This guarantees you are not receiving a re-painted demo vehicle or an older stock car sitting in dealer yards.
The 3 Core Sections of a VIN
Every 17-digit VIN is structured into three standardized segments:
WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier)
Identifies country of origin and car brand (e.g. MA3 for Maruti, MAT for Tata, MAL for Hyundai).
VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section)
Encodes body style, engine variant, transmission type, and security check digit (position 9).
VIS (Vehicle Identifier Section)
Contains Model Year, Assembly Plant Code, Month Code, and unique factory serial number.
Why Manufacturer Rules Differ in India
While international standards place the Model Year at the 10th Character, Indian automobile manufacturers encode the Manufacturing Month at different positions depending on their factory documentation systems:
| Manufacturer | Year Character | Month Character | Special Rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Motors | 10th Character | 12th Character | Standard 17-digit format |
| Maruti Suzuki | 10th Character | 11th Character | 11th character is Month |
| Mahindra | 10th Character | 12th Character | 11th character is Plant Code |
| Hyundai | 10th Character | 19th Character | Hyundai India uses 19-char VINs |
| Honda | 10th Character | 9th Character | Month is at 9th position |
| Volkswagen | 5th/6th Chars | 4th Character | 4th is Month, 5th/6th calendar year |
| Kia / MG / Jeep / Citroen | 10th Character | 11th Character | 10th Year, 11th Month |
Why VIN Manufacturing Month Audit Prevents Monsoon Flood Damage
Cars manufactured or stored in open dealer yards during peak monsoon months (June – September) are at severe risk of outdoor stockyard water logging. Rainwater collects inside subframe crevices, causing hidden seat runner rust, carpet mildew, and corroded ECU pins. Matching the VIN production date against stockyard arrival logs helps our inspectors flag water-logged batches before you take delivery.
Why You Should Never Take Delivery Without a Professional PDI
Decoding your VIN is the first step to ensuring your car isn't old stock. But VIN decoding cannot detect transit damage, repainted panels, battery health issues, or electronic faults. At CARROBAAR Drive, our expert engineers conduct on-site 300+ point inspection before registration so you get 100% peace of mind.
